The rumor mill suggests that for either the 2018 or 2019 model year, the BMW i3 will see another major battery capacity boost.

Whether it will be sold as a 2018 or a 2019 model in the U.S., the updated BMW i3 electric car is likely to make its debut at the Frankfurt auto show this fall.

2018 BMW i3 - Design Updates

Since all BMW models have evolutionary rather than revolutionary design, we don't expect some major overhaul of i3. But according to some rumors, 2018 BMW i3 will have updates in design. BMW will also offer a new set of wheels design, but that pretty much everything. 2018 BMW i3 - Powertrain

For 2017 model year, BMW installed new 33kWh battery pack to increase range for 40%. With fully charged battery, the range is 114 miles, while the previous had 81. With REx, the range is extended to 180 miles. So rumors are that they will add a bigger battery pack to make 2018 BMW i3 go for 150 miles on fully charged.

With new model year come new models. When manufacturers work to unveil completely new generation of some models, other cars …

The BMW i3 is BMW's first modern electric car. Powering all models is a 170-horsepower electric motor connected to the rear wheels via a single-speed transmission. BMW claims -60 mph in 7.2 seconds. Rear-wheel drive prevents all that torque from causing unwanted torque steer, while also ensuring that the i3 lives up to BMW's high standards for vehicle dynamics and handling. BMW claims that the i3 has an electric-only range of about 114 miles in normal everyday driving, which should be plenty for most people's daily commute. The car's charging times are remarkably short; BMW claims a scant 30 minutes are needed to charge the car up to 80 percent capacity through the standard DC fast-charging system. For those who desire a bit more range, BMW offers a range extender - a small 2-cylinder gasoline engine that functions as a generator. With the range extender, the i3 can travel about 180 miles until it needs a gas or charging station.

BMW i3

Citing undisclosed sources within the automaker, Welt am Sonntag is reporting that BMW will launch its all-new, longer range BMW i3 sometime in 2017. BMW naturally wasn't available for comment on the German media's revelation.

2017 BMW i3's 33 kWh Battery

The current all-electric 94 Ah BMW i3 (33 kWh pack) has an EPA-rated range of 114 miles (183 km) That's a substantial improvement over the 81-mile (130 km) range of the original 22 kWh i3.

On paper, a 50% increase over the 114-mile range of today's i3 would put the 2018 Model Year i3 at approximately 171 miles of EPA-rated range. It's a BMW, what do u expect.

Nobody buys a BMW because it is technically superior, but beacause it is called BMW.

Same here… cheaper then my previous car.

Rear seats were easier to fold down.

Bottom line, if you need the range and are excepting of average performance and handling, generic looks, The Bolt is a great car.

We have a beautiful long range car.

I have no knowledge of such an electric car.

More range never hurts either…

BMW really should rethink their EV strategy and make some that appeal more to people who want a normal car.

Besides Tesla, which car companies were really innovative? I've seen few low priced BMW cars in my time. - I'm not very demanding when it comes to car, it just doesn't matter what color, or any other detail has the BMW.

BMW is a European car company. 170 miles range is more like 140 miles range on the US scale.

🂠170 miles is the estimated EPA range, not the NEDC.

Pushing other manufacturers to increase their ranges too.

Why does the BMW i3 get better energy efficiency (that is, more miles per kWh) than the Model 3?

You can carry multiple passengers, or a larger and heavier battery pack, without having it impact your car's range much.

One important difference between the two cars is acceleration performance. -motor-trend-car-of-the-year-tesla-model-s/

BMW has invested a lot of money to make the i3 lighter. 3) People still want cool looking cars. Well of course BMW is going to increase the battery capacity, and the range, in next year's i3. If you haven't noticed, all manufacturers are slow walking range. At least BMW didn't shove batteries in the trunk and go home early.

BMW went all out and built a car that was entirely new from the ground up. BMW thought way outside of the box and built a very efficient and lightweight electric vehicle. Read on and find out what it's like to drive in, and live with, the BMW i3.

Reasons why people don't like the BMW i3

Especially from the front, the car looks weird. Narrow tires and an aerodynamic design that makes the car look impossibly small. What I don't like about the BMW i3

The range is just too limited. Battery performance: the range that the batteries provide is very sensitive to your driving style, use of the heater, A/C, and the outside temperature. The weight of the battery pack, positioned low in the car, helps a long way in keeping the car sure-footed.

What do I love about this car?

This car was going to be our 2nd car next to our Honda Pilot. However, I ended up liking this car so much that it became my primary car. I am able to charge the car for free quite often at certain ChargePoint locations and through the BMW's ChargeNow program. BMW extensive use of carbon fiber, aluminum, and other lightweight materials create such a lightweight vehicle that it defines the way it drives. Rear wheel drive: like any real BMW, this i3 is rear wheel drive only. This adds to the sporty character of the car. Rear wheel drive may scare some people off when it comes to winter driving, but since the electric engine is positioned over the rear wheels, the i3 performs remarkably well with winter tires.

One pedal driving makes driving in the city very easy.

Maintenance: I got the car in May of 2016. The car is eerily silent when you drive it. Electric BMW i3 is approved by a future driver.

I thought that a powerful combustion engine was at the heart of the driving experience and I never thought electric cars would appeal to me. Now, please BMW, think outside of the box again and bring us a fully electric 3 series sports sedan. Please let us know in the comments below if you too want BMW to offer a full-electric 3 series.

BMW i3 wins the 2017 award you-never-heard-off

The BMW i3 electric city car probably isn't the first Bimmer to come to mind when you think of sporty ones. Both BMW i3 variants are available with an optional range extender, which uses a two-cylinder gas engine to charge up the battery while on the go. This can boost the i3's range from 87 miles to 180. With BMW's own charging station, the i3 can go from an empty battery to a full one in about three hours. In terms of tech, both i3 variants receive the latest version of BMW's iDrive infotainment system. The 2018 BMW i3 will get an official debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. Love cars? Cars are Andrew's jam, as is strawberry. The i3 is BMW's first volume-produced model driven purely by electric power, and it features many innovations. Second, there's the Drive module, complete with high-voltage battery, suspension and rear motor - all crash and structural functions are integrated into this aluminum drive module. Battery life is rated at 12.9 kWh/100 km. There is also an available Range Extender model that incorporates a twin-cylinder gas engine that kicks in to generate power to top off the battery. Road Test

The onward-charging electric vehicle revolution made headlines recently on a couple of fronts. Road Test

The latest expression is found in the revised BMW i3 - it now has a larger battery, a greater electric driving range…

We are now halfway through our 60-day test drive of the new 2015 BMW i3 plug-in electric vehicle equipped with the range-extender. The new BMW i3 features the benefit of instant torque for speedier acceleration, quicker charging and enhanced range. 2018 BMW i3 - Exterior and Interior

The upcoming BMW version also introduces new alloy wheels, a deeper and overhauled rear bumper and optional two-tone exterior color schemes. The 2018 BMW I3 is exclusively designed with opposing doors that give access to the sizeable interior.

The most distinguishing trait of this machine includes a hatchback design with rear-hinged doors and an innovative interior inspired by BMW i8 sports car. Electric Motor in the 2018 BMW i3

The 2018 BMW i3 likely presents an electric motor that produces 170 horsepower and 184 pounds-feet of torque. Depending on the preferred drive mode it range with full charge: 80 miles (60 Ah), 114 miles (94 Ah).

The renovated 2018 BMW i3 is likely to grace the Frankfurt Motor Show in September of 2018.

Engineers from BMW are out testing an updated version of the i3.

The electric hatch didn't generate the impact BMW had hoped when the vehicle was launched in 2014 It was cramped, compromised and didn't deliver the typical BMW driving experience, and its 81-mile range was also down compared to some rivals.

Introduced in 2013, the BMW i3 marked the German company's first true foray into the electric vehicle world. It featured a small but usable range of about 87 miles-or a combined range of 180 miles with the optional gasoline range extender-and quirky styling that BMW hoped would resonate with younger car buyers. In a time when Tesla now offers a 200-plus mile fully electric Model 3, Chevrolet offers a 200-plus mile Bolt, Nissan is getting ready to deliver the new Leaf with likely a 200-plus mile range-and with a host of other electric vehicles on the horizon-BMW left the i3's electric-only range unchanged. BMW also updated the i3's charging cable, which can now transfer enough power to the batteries to travel the entire range in just three hours, which is five times quicker than the previously available Level 1 120v charging cable. For those wanting faster charging, BMW does offer a BMW TurboCord for $499, which will charge the i3 three-times faster than the standard charge cord.

Pricing hasn't been announced, with BMW stating that this information will become available closer to the car's on-sale date. 2018 bmw i3 Changes, Release Date, Review

An Interview With BMW's EV Manager At The NY International Auto Show

Guerrero is BMW i's North American Product & Operations Manager, and has been working in BMW's electric vehicle programs since the ActiveE pilot program began in 2011.

I think it's a testament to the car. BMW now offers four plug-in hybrid iPerformance vehicles, the X5-40e, 740e, 330e and the just-introduced 530e. There's a job for BMW i electric vehicles, and there's a job for BMW iPerformance plug-in hybrid vehicles. We need to get people used to plugging in their cars and experiencing the benefits of electric drive first. That experience may lead them to purchase a longer range PHEV the next time around, or it may lead them to an all-electric car. I then asked him if BMW of North America is ever going to participate in the i3 Battery Retrofit Program that BMW AG announced last year. We know even if there isn't a car-to-car alone business case for upgrade, it works from the whole 360-degree sustainability model. 30 Electric Car Benefits

Watching the evolution of electric cars is a lot like watching the evolution of fighter jets. Some second-generation EVs, such as the 2017 BMW i3 Range-Extender (REx) I've spent the past few weeks driving, are the beneficiaries of advancement in battery chemistry, upping their ranges above 100 miles per charge and into third-generation EV territory.

Excuse the admittedly messy analogy, but electric cars such as the 2017 BMW i3 REx are the MiG-21s of the EV world. Utilizing BMW's new-for-2017 94 Amp (or 33 kWh) battery, which ups electric-only range from 72 miles to 97 miles (full-electric i3s see a range increase from 81 to 114 miles), the i3 range extender supplements its battery pack, 170-hp and 184-lb-ft electric motor, and one-speed automatic transmission with an .6-liter 38-hp I-2 from the manufacturer's C600 scooter and a 2.3 gallon fuel tank. Combined range is an EPA-estimated 180 miles.

The front seats are comfortable, with a high SUV-like driving position and the car's large greenhouse giving the driver excellent visibility. Highway driving has another downside, too-it quickly eats into the i3 REx's 180 miles of range. I didn't ever need to push the i3 past its battery's range, so I tossed the keys to testing director Kim Reynolds to see if his highway-heavy commute could get the BMW's range extender scooting:

Refreshed 2018 BMW i3 Preview May 1, 2017 by Cedric (Driver Weekly)

The 2018 BMW i3 will be a refreshed model, but information is still very limited. At the moment, we are mostly going off of rumors about the improved urban electric car. The interior of the 2018 BMW i3 should be very similar to the current one but with the latest version of BMW's infotainment system. Increased Power

Due to its greater rear head- and legroom, backseat passengers will be able to stretch out a lot more in the BMW 440 Gran Coupe than the BMW i3. The BMW 440 Gran Coupe will be a favorite with taller drivers due to its greater front head- and legroom than the BMW i3.

The BMW 440 Gran Coupe is somewhat more expensive than the BMW i3. The BMW 440 Gran Coupe and the BMW i3 have similar Destination Charges.

Since the BMW 440 Gran Coupe is much wider than the BMW i3, finding a wide enough spot in a parking lot may be a bit more challenging. If you go with the BMW 440 Gran Coupe, you may be circling the block looking for a space large enough to park more often than with the BMW i3.

Due to its much higher torque, the engine of the BMW 440 Gran Coupe does a much better job of transmitting power to the wheels than the BMW i3.

The BMW 440 Gran Coupe has a significantly larger turning radius than the BMW i3, making it much more difficult to maneuver in and out of tight spots.

Performance

When it comes to horsepower, the BMW 440 Gran Coupe has a much more powerful engine than the BMW i3. The BMW 440 Gran Coupe offers greater seating capacity than the BMW i3, making it a better choice for those who find themselves chauffeuring others around. The BMW 440 Gran Coupe has a roomier cargo area for holding your bags or other items than the BMW i3.

The BMW 440 Gran Coupe comes with essentially the same basic warranty as the BMW i3.

2017 BMW i3Test Drive

May 02, 2017 Jerry Reynolds Comments Off on 2017 BMW i3Test Drive

This week I am behind the wheel of the 2017 BMW i3, a small all-electric vehicle that in many ways stays true to its BMW roots. For instance, this car is rear-wheel drive, which gives it much better handling and a more enjoyable driving experience than most of the other electric vehicles in production today.

My review vehicle has what is called a Range Extender, or REx as BMW calls it.

When the range extender comes on, you pick up an additional 66-80 miles of range. Actually no, because the gas engine does not power the BMW i3 has a battery range of 110-125 miles between charges, depending on which drive mode you are in.

Like most electric cars, acceleration is actually very good, with the battery pack supplying 170-horses and 184 pound-feet of torque. BMW makes it appear that the roof and body are not connected. The dual BMW front split grills are unmistakably BMW.

In the middle of the dash, you get the typical BMW infotainment controls with a navigation system, Bluetooth, satellite radio, the car's settings, etc. The BMW i3 handles really well with a low center of gravity and well-balanced weight distribution. Like most electrics, the absence of an engine makes the car super quiet.

Under normal conditions, the i3s is expected to achieve 97 miles of all-electric driving on a single charge but an available gas-powered, 2-cylinder range-extending engine increases that max to about 180 miles.

Without a fixed B-pillar or transmission tunnel, BMW's electric four-seater offers a surprising amount of interior space.

Add BMW to the list of automakers increasing the range of electric vehicles.

On Monday, the German company announced that the 2017 BMW i3 would have an extended range of up to 200 kilometres in every day driving conditions. That is up from an estimated range of 130-160 kilometres on current models.

The automaker achieved a 50 percent range increase using the standard NEDC (New European Driving Cycle) test, which gives the battery of range of 300 kilometres. Despite the longer range on battery, BMW will continue to offer the range extender, a two-cylinder gasoline engine that keeps the battery charged. BMW says that the new battery can be retrofitted into the older i3 thanks to the way the vehicle was designed.

After introducing the technologically advanced i8 sedan in the Indian car market, the German luxury car maker BMW has announced about the launch of another electric car BMW i3. BMW i3 price

When BMW unveiled their electric drive concept cars, the world was caught in a moment of wondrous awe. The BMW i brand was brought into fruition with these two cars, opening the door to what was once an image of the future. For those of that continue to live under a rock, the BMW i brand is a subcategorized branch of BMW that specializes in the production of lightweight, energy efficient vehicles. For 2017, BMW has upgraded the battery from the previous 60 Ampere-hour (Ah) battery with a new 94 Ah power source. Whereas the 60 Ah battery produced a total of 22 kWh (kilowatt hours) of effective power, the 94 Ah battery provides an additional 10 kWh, totalling 33 kWh of battery energy, which permits up to 200 kilometres combined (hwy/city) range. In scenarios in which battery power is depleted, a fuel range extender kicks in when battery life reaches 6.5% state of charge. Included in the optional Premium Package ($3000) are the 19 BMW i Turbine Wheels. Some question how well the car manages itself considering the size of the tires. That is no real surprise either as an increasing numbers of car manufacturers are offering electric models in various forms, range anxiety is reducing among buyers as they adapt their driving habits accordingly and battery technology is advancing too.

A perfect example of which is this new BMW i3 94Ah. The 94Ah refers to the greater cell capacity in the BMW's high-voltage battery and is improved from the original 60Ah version, giving it better range and performance. We even voted it one of our favourite cars of 2013. Make no mistake, the electric car revolution is coming, it's just coming slowly.

On the road, the BMW remains as unique as ever to drive. Price range from £27,830-£30,980

Interestingly, despite the £3,150 premium for the range extender version, the buying habits of i3 have not proved as BMW predicted either.

With range anxiety issues over the original i3, BMW expected the range extender to account for more than threequarters of sales but in reality the split has been closer to 50/50 with this new 94Ah model likely to favour the all-electric car still further.

The i3 is BMW's small and striking electric car and it's one of the most desirable EVs you can buy.

BMW sells a pure electric i3 alongside a model fitted with a small petrol range-extender engine for charging the batteries.

Design

The car features suicide-style rear doors that open backwards for better access. Given that the i3 is an electric car, it's hard to hear it coming. The two different powertrain choices on offer have been at the forefront of the recent upgrades BMW has delivered to its electric city car. The 2016 models come with significantly boosted electric ranges. These improvements have been achieved by fitting the car with a denser 33kWh battery pack. A single electric motor powers the rear axle through a single-speed fixed transmission. BMW claims that the updated i3 has an all-electric range of 195 miles - almost double the 90 mile range promised in earlier versions of the car.

Alongside the pure electric model is a range extender. It provides an extra 80 miles of charge, taking the car's range up to 276 miles, according to BMW.

Prices

Buyers will qualify for the £4,500 government electric-car grant, however, taking the i3 in pure electric form to £27,830, while the range extender will cost £30,980.

Reviews

BMW's upgrades and the extra all-electric range of the 2016 model make it quite a persuasive proposition, adds the site, although it's the range-extender model that steals the show, making plug-in hybrids such as the Volkswagen Golf GTE look somewhat old-fashioned.

It has what it takes to appeal to people who like driving cars, it says, adding that like Tesla, BMW has built an EV with petrolhead appeal.

For a car with such a modern powertrain and unique proportions, Top Gear says the i3 drives like BMW. The Daily Telegraph isn't as impressed by the car's futuristic styling. It says that it looks like something that Dyson might offer when it eventually produces its battery car.

Our phones have trained us to be battery charge aware, and that'll make our adoption of electric cars and the charging that goes with them easier. BMW is hoping the dreshly upgraded i3 electric car will remove that range anxiety. Now the i3 94Ah has arrived, and BMW says it has a real-world range of 200km. Design

The i3 was built from the ground up as an all-electric car. Small car electric rivals to the i3 in Australia are almost non-existent. The little electric Nissan isn't a premium offering like the BMW. Those rear doors open backwards suicide style, but BMW would prefer to call them coach doors. BMW assures us that the carbon fibre structure is still incredibly strong.

There's public charging stations run by ChargePoint which allow BMW owners to charge up fully in four hours and for free. Driving

We test drove both the range extender and the pure electric i3. BMW says the battery pack is designed to last the entire service life if the i3, but it's covered by an eight year/100,000km battery warranty.

The i3 94Ah is the i3 we've been waiting for from BMW. The 60Ah without the range extender engine just doesn't have the range needed to keep the anxiety at bay. The heart of any electric vehicle is its battery. This BMW i3 cutaway shows the battery removed from drive module.

When it comes to electric cars, it's all about the battery. Nissan's early LEAF battery woes:

How's my BMW i3's battery holding up?

BMW launched their first retail all-electric car, the i3 in Europe in late 2013. BMW is one of the few EV manufacturers that offer a clear battery capacity loss warranty, and has guaranteed at least 70% capacity for 8 years or 100,000 miles. That value will be how many miles (or what percentage of 1 mile) the car has traveled for every 1% of battery used. Miles driven: 67

The car is still estimating 22 miles of electric range after driving 53 miles. BMW has warned against relying on this since it is an estimate. BMW claimed that the usable capacity for the 2014 - 2016 i3s was 18.8 kWh. When the car was new, I was averaging 78 miles per charge in favorable weather conditions; it's now down to 75 miles per charge. That's pretty impressive since the EPA range rating for the 2014 i3 REx was 72 miles per charge. Battery capacity loss concerns are on the minds of many potential consumers that are interested in entering into the world of electric cars. BMW i North American Product & Operations Manager, Jose Guerrero

I think it's a testament to the car. BMW i & BMW iPerformance vehicles are side by side at NYIAS

Guerrero speaking at an unidentified BMW event

I then asked him if BMW of North America is ever going to participate in the i3 Battery Retrofit Program that BMW AG announced last year. We know even if there isn't a car-to-car alone business case for upgrade, it works from the whole 360-degree sustainability model. When it comes to electric vehicle charging equipment, there's certainly no shortage of choices. I've been using ClipperCreek products to charge my electric cars since 2009, as BMW choose ClipperCreek as their partner to provide the charging equipment for the MINI-E Trial Lease Program. My Power Wall

It's been well documented that the range extender has limits. The car will then go into reduced power mode and slow down to about 40 mph. If the car doesn't properly recognize the loss of capacity, it can miscalculate the remaining state of charge. The onboard battery management system (BMW calls it the SME High Voltage Battery Module) isn't adjusting quickly enough to the capacity loss, and it is overestimating the actual remaining level of charge.

That means the car is in reduced power. In some cases the car will continue to drive along at reduced power mode, but others have seen the car simply slow down and shut off shortly after the range extender operation began.

It appears that you are driving the car down to a very low charge. They've told me that when the range extender kicks in, it does not charge the battery. It keeps the battery charged to get you another 10-30 miles down the road depending on driving conditions. An i3 with the range extender option exposed. Once BMW updates the software, there is no issue. BMW has an eight year, 100,000 mile battery capacity warranty for the i3 that guarantees at least 70% capacity. Looking for home charging equipment? Range pales compared to newest rivals

Without a doubt, the BMW i3 is the most unusual car to bear the brand's signature blue and white roundel. ( Read more about how we rate cars)

The i3 is offered in several worlds, as BMW calls the model's trim levels-Mega, Giga, and Tera.

For 2017, BMW has addressed the i3's range. A more power dense battery is available as an option to increase range from 81 to 114 miles. BMW i3 styling and performance

The 22-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery tucked under the floorpan that gives a range of 81 miles has been supplemented by a 33 kWh model with a 114-mile range for 2017. An optional 650cc 2-cylinder range-extending (REx) engine produces 38 horsepower and 40 pound-feet of torque. It doesn't actually power the wheels, but instead runs a generator to recharge the battery, boosting the car's range to as much as 150 miles between fill-ups. Touching the brake is only required when full stopping power is needed, which helps distinguish it from other electric cars that are tuned to mimic conventional automatic transmission cars. The i3 is rated as the single most energy-efficient electric car sold in the U.S. BMW's own home charging station is rated at a hefty 7.4 kw, which helps provide charging times of around 3.5 hours for the lower capacity battery and 4.5 for the higher capacity. BMW i3 models offer a Combined Charging System quick-charging port as well, although today there are only a handful of public charging stations using that standard.

BMW i3 comfort, safety, and features

BMW doesn't outfit the i3 with conventional trim levels. A few option packages are also available and there's a BMW-branded charging station that's available as an accessory.

2017 BMW i3 Review on

A bigger battery makes the 2017 BMW i3 a far more compelling eco-commuter than ever before.

If you're looking for a premium yet practical EV, the i3 is your car.

Most would rightly conclude that the BMW i3 is some kind of eco-car when gazing at its unconventional styling. In designing the i3 to be a dedicated electric vehicle at the outset, BMW went to great lengths to maximize the potential of the car's electric motor and battery pack. BMW is aiming for a higher electric vehicle classification than the Volt, so its tiny .6-liter two-cylinder engine and 2.5-gallon gas tank are intentionally insufficient for interstate travel.

The Range Extender version, which comes exclusively with this bigger battery, enjoys a 30-mile range increase.

The 2017 BMW i3 is a four-door hatchback with seating for four passengers. Apart from that it is a pure carryover model with the same 170-horsepower electric motor that drives the rear wheels. It's fed by a 22-kilowatt-hour battery that provides enough power for an estimated 81 miles of range. Because the Range Extender is heavier, it travels an estimated 97 miles on electricity. An incremental increase in fuel capacity this year - 2.4 gallons instead of 1.9 gallons - enables a combined range of 180 miles of driving range.

trim tested

The ratings in this review are based on our full test of the 2014 BMW i3 w/Range Extender (battery electric 1-speed direct drive w/.6L 2-cyl. gasoline generator)

The most significant change is the new larger battery that improves the all-electric i3's range to 114 miles, a 33-mile boost. Our Range Extender test car could go 72 miles on electricity and 150 miles total; a similar 2017 example goes 97 miles on electricity and 180 miles total. But our findings still remain broadly applicable to this year's BMW i3.

To learn more about the BMW i3 of this generation, read our updates from a full year of living with a 2014 BMW i3 with the optional range extender. Please note that the 2017 BMW i3 differs from our long-term i3 in that a larger battery with more range is now available, and today's range-extender version is only available with that larger battery. Our team drives every car you can buy. Back to the BMW i3 itself, note that it accounted for 8.4% of BMW of North America's passenger car sales in September, and is the 3rd-best-selling EV in the world since its launch (only trailing the Nissan LEAF and Tesla Model S, I presume). Furthermore, 80% of buyers are coming to the BMW brand for the first time. This assumes range is extended with high cost battery (more kWh). If the range is extended with same price battery, any extension would be good, but I suspect i3/leaf is only with bigger battery.

Problem with more range for now is that it's strictly with bigger battery. Several thousand extra dollars to replace a battery for 11 year old car isn't likely, especially when such old car is typically driven by poorer people.

Even 150 miles range is pushing it: 40kWh @ $100/kWh = $4000   $1000 labor = $5000 for a 11 year old car. EV News. Here Is What EV Enthusiasts and BMW i3 Owners Say About BMW's Electric SUV

As Audi is reportedly planning a BMW i3 revival I saw an interesting discussion in Electric Car group on Facebook where the EV enthusiasts and BMW i3 owners discussed sharing their thoughts on i3. Steven Tyrell Crosbie writes that from a purely design standpoint, he think the BMW i3 , and BMW i8 are both beautifully sculpted. The generator only provides electricity to the motor / battery. It never diectly engages any gears to propel the car. Other's say it looks better than many other electric cars.

If you are a BMW i3 owner could you please verify? What is your opinion about BMW i3? By the way, refreshed 2018 BMW i3 electric car is coming soon.

94 Ah Deka World Range Extender Hatchback

Fair Market Price

The 2017 BMW i3 gets a new 94 Ah, 33 kWh battery, which extends range to 114 miles of city/highway use, per BMW. That's a 50 percent increase in stored energy, and a similar increase in all-electric driving range without use of the optional gasoline-powered range extender.

Vehicle Summary

The BMW i3 is the smallest, most urban-targeted vehicle in its i range of vehicles, which includes, to date, the BMW i3 and BMW i8 The i3 combines a practical five-door, hatchback layout with a small footprint and high maneuverability.

The 2017 BMW i3 gets a significant upgrade over previous versions of the compact, (optionally) range-extended electric urban runabout thanks to its new 33 kWh battery, which increases its all-electric range from 81 miles (EPA-rated) to 114 miles (according to BMW). The 2017 BMW i3 is efficient for an electric vehicle, requiring an EPA-estimated 27 kWh to cover every 100 miles. That compares favorably even with the electric car superstar, the Tesla Model s, which requires 34-38 kWh per 100 miles. If range anxiety gets the best of you, BMW also offers a 650-cc two-cylinder gasoline-powered range extender for the i3. The range-extended version of the 2017 BMW i3 also comes standard with the new 33 kWh battery pack, but also gets a 25 percent larger fuel tank for 2017, though BMW hasn't disclosed a new total range figure for the extended-range version. The BMW i3's extensive use of cutting-edge technology-a carbon fiber main structure, battery-electric power (with optional gasoline range extender), extensive recycled material used in the cabin-is attractive to buyers seeking an efficient urban vehicle. Its quirky look and BMW branding are further draws. In our first drive of the vehicle, we noted sloppy handling in slaloms and corners-decidedly un-BMW characteristics. Pricing

2017 BMW I3 60 AH MEGA WORLD HATCHBACK

Last year the BMW i3 range received a battery upgrade to keep it competitive in the growing segment. Now BMW has introduced a sportier model for the i3 lineup, the 2018 BMW i3s. Both the i3 and i3s are available with the two-cylinder range extender gas engine, which adds an additional 87 miles of range, increasing your range from around 97 miles to a maximum of 180 miles. If you choose the standard i3 you'll have a 114 mile driving range.

BMW has also unveiled a new TurboCord charger for the i3. The 2018 BMW i3 and BMW i3s will debut next month at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Week With a Car: 2017 BMW i3 With Range Extender

33-kWh lithium-ion battery pack

You're a BMW nerd. You're on the Internet, reading something on a car site. Regardless: BMW makes several new cars that I don't care for. Car seats have grown larger at a much greater rate. The EPA says the range-extended i3 has 97 miles of electric range , which isn't really enough for long distance zero emission driving.

It's an electric car designed for city use! The optional range-extender engine (you can also buy the i3 as a pure EV, with up to 114 miles of range) helps. The engine is a 647-cc two-cylinder borrowed from BMW's C600 scooter. The latter produces juice for the car's electric motor. Adds indefinite range if you keep filling the fuel tank. California's zero-emission-vehicle mandate allows BMW to earn credits for range-extended i3s as if they were pure battery-electric cars rather than hybrids-but only so long as the electric range meets or exceeds the gas range. That reads like a car review. I THOUGHT I TOLD YOU, STOP WITH THE BMW-NERD THING.

What's that range-extender thing like?

If I were you, I'd just keep the battery charged.

I give up: Is this car good at its job? Steering feel is decent for a modern car, though surprisingly distant for a BMW. Especially given the narrow, 165-section tires and the car's relatively low unsprung weight. Isn't that what car journalists do?

No! (Although yes, that is what car journalists do.) Why do most small electric cars look odd?
