2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe first drive review

Where the previous E-Class Coupe shared much of its architecture with the smaller C-Class , the latest iteration is based on the E-Class sedan. The larger, wider platform allows more cabin space, better stability and increases the car's overall sense of gravitas. Though the cabin is derived from the E-Class sedan's, the coupe receives its own exclusive elements, including unique seating, and turbine-inspired air vents and start-stop button. Sport Package includes massaging contoured front seats, Dynamic Body Control and 19-inch AMG wheels.

The Intelligent Drive Package features all the autonomous driving technology that debuted with the S-Class and includes active blind-spot assist, active-lane keeping assist, Pre-Safe plus, Drive Pilot, Distance Pilot Distronic with Steering Pilot and Traffic Sign Assist.

There are a few standalone options available - these include climate comfort seats, rear window sunshade, 23-speaker, 1450 watt Bermester 3D Surround Sound, heated rear seats and Air Body Control.

Although the E-Class debuts with four different engine choices, including two diesels, for now Canadian cars will receive only the E400 4MATIC all-wheel-drive version. Switching cars for an air-suspension-equipped model, we enjoyed the extra damping ability through the various drive modes. Slightly roomier than competitors Audi A5, or BMW 4 Series Coupe, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe is well-poised to succeed when it arrives here this summer.

Four-wheel drive, air suspension and 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine as standard

Rather incredibly, a fifth version of the E-Class offered by Mercedes, alongside the saloon, estate, coupe and cabriolet. Four-wheel drive is provided, as is an extra ‘All-Terrain' setting to the drive mode selector. Because it's essentially an E-Class Estate, it's already one of the most practical family cars you can buy. The suspension also helps the handling significantly, because body lean is exceptionally well contained for a car that's so comfortable. There's no doubt that the All-Terrain is a very good car. Mercedes-Benz Reviews

The 2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe is a jump forward from its predecessor in every way. This is a proper luxury GT car with performance to match its looks.

The most affordable petrol-powered Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe - the GLC250 - is a prestigious crossover with more than a bit of practicality on its side.

Mercedes-Benz has been building jaw-dropping coupes for decades, or at least, for as long as I can remember. From 1961-71 was a particularly creative period for the German luxury car manufacturer, which saw the likes of the 220SE, 250SE and 280SE coupes released...

-mercedes-benz-glc-coupe-review/ The ability for Mercedes-Benz to seemingly have an answer for every automotive question has been further illustrated by the local launch of the 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe. It's the second SUV coupe derivative for the German manufacturer, and the fourth act of coupe-ness in the current lineup, following S-Class, GLE, C-Class and now the GLC...

Style statement: 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe first drive review

All of the E-Class Sedan's eerily advanced gadgetry transfers over, including the semi-autonomous features. No, it won't drive itself. But it will follow cars around curves at speeds of up to 130 mph (this car's limited top speed), though we don't recommend taking your hands off the wheel. A streamlined E-Class Coupe lineup is heading to the American market later this year with one engine - a turbocharged 3.0-liter, 329-hp, 354 lb-ft V6 - a nine-speed automatic transmission and your choice of rear- or all-wheel drive. The 4Matic cars get fancy wipers as standard. Figure something around $56,000 for the rear-wheel drive car and $58,250 for the 4Matic version.

The E-Class Coupe seems to be designed to do two big things well: Span great distances in near-S-Class comfort, and look great moving through the landscape and on arrival. Sport and sport-plus drive settings are amusing, for a while at least, on tight, winding roads. As for looks: Design quality is a subjective thing, obviously, but this is the E-Class Coupe's strong suit. The E-Class sedan is a handsome, purposeful-looking car, and there are elements of it here, but it also benefits from a good dose of S-Class Coupe from nose to tail.

The E-Class Coupe is a stylish tourer, not a sports car, and with no 4.0-liter V8-powered variant on the way, it seems destined to remain so. But if you're looking for a driver-oriented two-door, don't cry for want of an E63 Coupe. Why aren't people buying coupes, again?

All-new Mercedes-Benz E-Class coupe impresses with bountiful style and impressive

BARCELONA, Spain - Next to sports cars, a two-door sporty coupe has to be one of the more indulgent automotive purchases one can make. Not that there's anything wrong with that, especially if said coupe is a reward after years of driving prudent, family-style transportation. That said, it's a golden time for those in the market for something upscale and lively, certainly if it's a new Mercedes Benz E-Class Coupe that's being considered.

2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe

Fortunately, Mercedes has this covered as well. Said two-door is longer, wider and higher than the previous E 400 Coupe for greater room and comfort. 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe

The Coupe comes standard with direct control” suspension and is tuned for comfort with an amplitude-dependent damping system. Three modes are available — Comfort, Sport and Sport+ — offering a range of adjustments. The grip afforded by the 4Matic all-wheel drive system inspired confidence.

As a halo vehicle within the E-Class model range, it holds greater importance.
Mercedes Canada has yet to announce pricing.

As we stated when Mercedes-Benz unveiled the new E coupe, the car is considerably larger than its predecessor The new W213-generation E-class platform has grown 4.4 inches between the axles, 4.8 inches in length, 2.9 inches in width, and 1.5 inches in height, thus placing the new mid-size two-door neatly between the C- and S-class coupes. Compared with the E-class sedan, it is 1.5-inches lower on a 2.6-inch-shorter wheelbase.

Mated to Mercedes' ubiquitous nine-speed automatic and a choice of rear- or all-wheel drive, the engine proves plenty capable of motivating the car, but we find little inspiration in its character. That said, Mercedes claims that the all-wheel-drive car can accelerate to 60 mph in 5.2 seconds; we expect to beat that by a tenth or two.

Our car also was an Edition 1 model wearing 20-inch AMG wheels, Pirelli rubber, and cross-drilled brake rotors. Whereas the C-class coupe can feel snug, this new W213 coupe—with its extra width, thin roof pillars, and vast expanses of glass—has a definite sense of spaciousness, even when considered alongside the S-class coupe. The coupe market may be shrinking overall, but this car proves the body style remains very much alive at Mercedes-Benz.

Spy Shots of the New Mercedes Benz E class Coupe

The new E-class Coupe is different from the previous generation model which felt more like a glorified C-class Coupe.

The new E-class Coupe is based on the MRA rear-wheel-drive modular architecture, just like the other body styles of the E-Class.

It's officially called the Mercedes-AMG 43 and on paper at least, offers credible performance. It's not an AMG-built engine, but rather a standard Mercedes-Benz powerplant, with some mild fettling from the AMG division. All models, excluding the SLC 43, feature 4Matic all-wheel drive. There's a sportier steering setup as well.

This 43 AMG engine comes to market in numerous products.

The Drive

On track were the C-Class products, with the SLC and SUVs available for the on-the-road drive. We opted straight for the coupes as they're by far the prettiest models in the C-Class lineup. There's no word from Mercedes-AMG on whether the SLC will get a V8. Remember the SLK55 AMG?

The C-Class sedan is selling like hot cakes for Mercedes-Benz Malaysia, and the German luxury marque expects its new two-door, four-seater C-Class coupe to be a hit with well-heeled Malaysians as well.

Our test drive unit was the RM333,888 C 250 Coupe, with a satisfying 211hp and 350Nm of torque under the hood, powering the rear wheels. Now, this luxury two-door, four-seater coupe is not meant to be a comfort-biased car for the family. You get two rear sports seats, separated by dual cup-holders. In terms of motoring pleasure, our C 250 coupe delivered, with its sports suspension which is 15mm lower than the C-Class sedan, and 19-inch AMG alloy wheels with high performance Pirelli P Zero run-flat tyres sized 255/35 (rear) and 225/40 (front). Flicking the small shift lever downward puts the car in Drive mode, and flicking the lever upwards puts it in Reverse. You can control the car's radio, navigation, media and drive settings via steering wheel buttons, the touchpad controller or a large rotary dial.

In summary, the C-Class coupe provides an exhilarating drive with nice handling, precise steering and a powerful drivetrain, and it rides lower than the C-Class sedan."

A sign of the changing times, the 2018 Mercedes-Benz E400 Coupe is the only vehicle in its class.
The E-Class Coupe is distinguishable by its two LED stroke signature in the headlight. The C-Class sports one, and the refreshed S-Class sports three.

Ditching the chrome unibrow of the S-Class and the tall rear end of the C-Class, the E-Class Coupe is Mercedes' best two door design in decades.

A class of one, but easily a valedictorian

The E-Class Coupe is the only midsize luxury coupe available going forward, but don't think of this model as a weird outlier.

All other big coupes fall in the compact class, so if you're looking for more space and size but don't want to give up that sexy coupe style, well, the E-Class is it. The only engine available for the E-Class Coupe is a biturbo 3.0-liter V6 making 329 horsepower and 354 lb.-ft. of torque.

18-inch wheels are standard, but opting for the AMG package adds these handsome 19-inch wheels as an option, among other choices.

Models equipped with 4Matic all-wheel-drive start at $61,400, and if you'd rather have the wind in your hair, the Cabriolet model will be available later this summer, and features optional all-wheel-drive for the first time ever on an E-Class convertible.

Moreover, the E400 Coupe makes me wonder why you'd ever spend over 6 figures for the S-Class Coupe when its little sibling is arguably just as good. In the case of the E-Class Coupe, it seems Mercedes has done so by making one of the best Benzes I've driven in years.

2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe.

30 May 2017

A new week brings a new Mercedes-Benz. It joins the C-Class Coupe and S-Class Coupe in a refined two-door range that better aligns with the brand's sedan/wagon structure.

Somewhat confusingly, the previous generation E-Class Coupe was actually based on the underpinnings of the previous C-Class. While the new model uses the same scalable architecture (dubbed MRA in Mercedes-speak), as both the smaller and larger coupes that bookend it, the E-Class Coupe more closely mirrors the sedan in size and equipment.

Mercedes Australia is offering a similar line-up of Coupe variants to the sedan with an entry-level E220d and two petrol models, the E300 and E400 4Matic.

The ride on the standard Air Body Control air suspension set-up is smooth and comfortable but still offers good body control.

However, if you think the Coupe is a sports car think again. If what you want is a comfortable coupe to cosset you on long drives then this fits the bill perfectly. Not only is it a pleasant car to drive but the Drive Pilot system offers the kind of assistance that makes it even more convenient, either at cruising speeds or in heavy traffic.

Inside the E-Class Coupe, it is a similar experience to the sedan. Mercedes claims there is more space in the back of the E-Class Coupe than there is in the S-Class Coupe.

The top-rung Mercedes-Benz S-Class has long been the testbed for the latest technology from the automaker; lately, semi-autonomous tech and all. The steering wheel has tablet-like control.

The car starts at $51,250, which is just under $1,000 cheaper than the old E-Class. Features from the new E-Class will eventually make their way throughout the Mercedes-Benz lineup.

On the outside, well, it looks like a Mercedes sedan. At one point on the drive, there was a C-Class driving behind our vehicle and we couldn't tell whether it was a member of out E-Class fleet. That's not to say the car is bad looking from the outside—it's just another Mercedes sedan. Advertisement
While the car doesn't look necessarily huge, it is a big vehicle. The car itself is two inches longer than the outgoing E-Class, and the wheelbase is three inches wider.

The Interior

This car is all about the technology.

The car has three display options for the screens—Classic, Sport and Progressive—and the first two feature gauges.

The steering wheel has touch-control buttons on both the left and right sides, and that's new to the E-Class.

One of the things the E300 didn't have at the time of the drive is the ability to communicate with other E-Class cars through the Car-to-X system, which the Mercedes reps said should come about month after its launch this summer. Connected cars are coming, people. If you end up crashing this car, Mercedes put a few things in place to make it easier on you with Pre-Safe” systems.

The car has more semi-autonomous capabilities than have ever been on the Mercedes lineup, with pilot systems for braking, accelerating, steering, cruise-control speed adjustments, lane changing, stopping and parking.

With the Mercedes DISTRONIC system and steering pilot, the car does a great job in straight-line traffic. Each time I had a slow, merging car approach the E300, the car didn't see it—at that point, the driver had to take control and accommodate for another car entering the lane.

When another car merges, the driver needs to be in control.

When using cruise control, turning on the new speed-limit pilot will adjust the car's speed to the posted limit. We Actually Drove The Damn Thing

As for how the car actually drove, it was fantastic.

The E-Class has four driving modes—Comfort, Sport, Sport Plus and Individual, which is the only one you can set yourself. Turns out, that growl isn't really the engine on the car. You might groan at this, but Mercedes has their reasons—the noise-dampening systems on luxury cars. Overall, the new Mercedes-Benz E300 is a great car. The 328d xDrive wagon (as well as the sedan model of the same car) comes in at 34 mpg combined.

With the all-new 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe, Mercedes-Benz has created a product using a well-known recipe used by the German automaker for most of its previous models.

Performance - 85%

The 2018 E-Class Coupe, like the E-Class sedan introduced last year, is an amalgam of safety and connectivity technologies combined with a smooth and comfortable ride that can also be dynamic depending on the chosen driving mode, all wrapped together in a sharp design that stands out.
There are plenty of options to add on to the 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe, but the list of standard equipment is also quite plentiful. To begin with, every new 2018 E-Class Coupe get the AMG package which includes 18-inch wheels, a full aerodynamic package and a unique chromed grill.

The overall appearance of the E-Class Coupe is not only elegant, but also sporty. Magic Vision Control wipers are just one example of the advanced technologies found in the 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe. There is also an array of active safety systems that almost turn the E-Class Coupe into an autonomous car. Almost because Mercedes-Benz will still insist you put your hands back on the wheel after about 45 seconds of hands-free driving, but theoretically the car could keep going without driver intervention. The 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe will have only one engine at the time of its launch, a 3.0-liter biturbo V6 developing 329 horsepower and 354 lb.-ft. of torque. This engine offers the kind of performance buyers will expect from the E-Class Coupe, and can reach 100 km/h in only 5.3 seconds. The E-Class Coupe is definitely a comfort-oriented model, and the car will not explode forward when you floor the right pedal, but the driver will sense a linear and controlled power delivery. Switch to Sport or Sport + mode, however, and the personality of the E-Class Coupe 2018 changes completely. The 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe is much more than an evolution of the 2017 model. While the 2017 E-Class has yet to make it to India, the new E-Class sedan has been launched elsewhere. This time, thanks to the modular rear-wheel-drive (MRA) platform, we can expect better variety of cars globally. After the E-Class L which was a long-body version of the E-Class launched for China, there is now another coupe version which was spied upon during testing.

Motor Authority states that the coupe version should be available in a 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder (in-line) engine options.

What you see with the 2018 Mercedes-Benz E400 4Matic coupe is clear, crystalline, even. All cars on test by Americans were equipped with Benz's optional, well-proven 4Matic all-wheel drive system. Bigger in every dimension than its predecessor, the 2018 E-Class coupe is genuinely tailored for four full-size adults. The 2018 Mercedes-Benz E400 coupe is a very, very good car, but until all the gadgetry is fused into a traditional Mercedes aura of faultless superiority, it's not a great one.

The 2018 Mercedes E400 Coupe Is a Modern Take On an Old Formula
A personal car, reinvented for 2018.
Mercedes-Benz

It's easy to look at the 2018 Mercedes E400 Coupe as, simply, an E-Class with two fewer doors, but that's selling it short. For Mercedes, it represents a return to building the sort of car it abandoned in 1996-the mid-size luxury coupe. The previous generation E-Class coupe and the two generations of CLK that preceded it were built on modified, smaller C-Class platforms in an attempt to give them sporting credentials. This one, though, is a proper E-Class.

In carrying the old-school coupe mantle, this E-Class stands alone.
Unlike the smaller C-Coupe and the decadent two-door S-Class , the E-Coupe features very minimal sculpting on its body panels and fairly subdued fender flares. The result is a simple, elegant-looking car that recalls the austere Mercedes coupes of old.

Inside, the interior is nearly identical to the E-Class sedan and wagon, with the exception of a slightly lower driving position and turbine-shaped air vents.

The E400 Coupe excels on wide, open highways, where it maintains speed effortlessly. It's very apparent this car is developed by people who commute on Germany's high-speed Autobahns.
Mercedes will offer the E-Coupe with three different suspension systems-Direct Control, which utilizes fixed dampers, Dynamic Body Control, with adaptive dampers, and Air Body Control, which brings three-chamber air springs.

Where the self-leveling Air Body Control works a treat if you have the car loaded with people and cargo, the adaptive dampers offer a more cohesive driving experience in normal conditions.

The E-Coupe also gets Mercedes' new dual-screen gauge cluster and infotainment system

If you're a fan of big old-school German coupes, but you want modern safety and tech, you'll like this car.

A few cars are lucky enough to have all three, which is the case with this new coupe from Germany.
The 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe has been thoroughly restyled, and although it inevitably shares many styling cues with the new-generation sedan and wagon variants of the family, it does set itself apart. Compared to the previous-gen coupe, the new car's wheelbase has been stretched, while overall length and width are up as well. Moreover, the E-Class Coupe's suspension is 15 millimetres lower to the ground than the sedan, giving it a more muscular stance. Like every model Mercedes offers in Canada, an AMG styling package is included, which adds sportier bumpers, side sills, AMG 18-inch alloy wheels and a front grille speckled with chrome dots. The German brand claims an increase in shoulder room up front, which is marginally better than in the old E-Class Coupe. On a side note, the car's trunk has shrunk from 450 to 425 litres.

Only one version of the 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe will be launched in Canada—at least for now. We'll see when we drive the 2018 Mercedes-Benz E 400 4MATIC in our country.
In short, the E-Class Coupe's cabin will look fabulous, no matter what we choose.

The Sport Package brings multicontour front seats, 19-inch wheels and the more dynamic suspension. The Technology Package adds head-up display, a 360-degree camera system and the MULTIBEAM LED headlights, while the Intelligent Drive Package features advanced electronic driving aids, DRIVE PILOT and DISTRONIC with Steering Pilot adaptive cruise control. This new-generation system can steer the car on its own, at least on the highway. Canadian pricing has not yet been finalised for the 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe, but we're estimating it at about $70,000. Other trims should follow soon after, but like the outgoing-generation E-Class Coupe, we shouldn't hold our breath on an AMG E 63 version.

The company claims a 0-60 sprint of 6.2 seconds for 3,902-lb rear-wheel-drive cars. The quiet, composed ride is what E300 consumers should expect from a car in this class. Prices for the rear-wheel-drive version start at $53,075 while the AWD 4MATIC starts at $55,575, including destination. Will the new E-Class with all of its self-driving technologies gain ground in the midsize luxury sedan segment?

2018 Mercedes E-Class Coupe Review

Transmission: 9-speed automatic

The 2018 Mercedes E-Class coupe is easily the most minimalist of Mercedes' family of two-doors; it ditches the chiseled top line of the C-Class and S-Class coupes in favor of shaped and sensuously bare shoulders, giving the E-Class coupe an elegant-yet-aggressive look. Americans get to choose between rear and all-wheel drive, while Canadians will get the 4Matic system standard.
The bones of the outgoing coupe were little more than a reworked C-Class — it even shared the smaller car's wheelbase and track width — but this E-Class moves to a version of a new platform that allows the two-door to grow 4.8 inches (123 mm) longer, nearly 3 inches (74 mm) wider, and one inch (33 mm) taller.

The growth spurt also gives passengers more space — rear legroom grows by 3 inches (74 mm), which joins incremental increases in head, shoulder, and knee space to evolve the E-Class coupe into a legitimate long-distance four-seat grand tourer.

Inside, the coupe adopts the same dashboard, infotainment and touch points as the sedan and wagon. Toggling the Dynamic Select switch to Sport+ actually made the car perform worse. Regardless of suspension choice, all E-Class coupes sit a half-inch lower (15 mm) than the sedan and wagon.

Interested in a new car? This car is the 2018 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe, which will join its sedan brother this summer ( a new convertible will join the lineup later this year.) (To briefly confuse things, the last E-Class coupe was actually based on the C-Class , which explains the size difference.)
This E-Class Coupe is not a hardcore two-door curve carver like the AMG GT or C63 S coupe, it is more of an elegant boulevardier aligned with the S550 Coupe, controlled and in control, but never harsh.

A Mercedes-Benz two-door - especially one powered by the 329-horsepower/354-pound-foot twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 that motivates much of the rest of the E-Class line of cars and crossovers - is one of life's more adult pleasures.

2017 Mercedes-Benz S550e and C350e - Road Test

Occupying the wide middle ground between the S-Class and C-Class, the new E-Class has more in common with the latter model. It's larger, more attractive, and sports a better engine than the C-Class — and avoids the massive fee commanded by the S-Class.

The 2018 E-Class Coupe is almost five inches longer than its forerunner. Mercedes is leaving the 3.0-liter V6 biturbo in the E400 Coupe. The coupe won't get the 2.0-liter four-cylinder that kicks off the sedan's lineup, though 4Matic all-wheel drive remains on the menu.

Benz says the E-Class Coupe can make it to 60 mph in 5.2 seconds from a dead stop. The coupe is available with Mercedes' Drive Pilot suite of semi-autonomous driving systems. The 2018 E-Class Coupe will debut at the Detroit Auto Show next month and go on sale next summer.

Again, the coupe doesn't have a 4. Making the E-Class coupe actually E-Class based is probably a good move from a branding and lineup rationalization perspective. I've never liked coupes to be big. Every C-Class I've driven, including AMGs, have been insufferable pieces of shit.

Every E-Class I've driven has been sublime - with the AMG E63 S being particularly spectacular.
