Ssangyong will debut a new all-electric car concept at the Geneva Motor Show 2018 in March. The South Korean car manufacturer has today released details about the car ahead of the launch.

Called the e-SIV the SUV concept will be powered by a 140kW motor and features fast charging of up to 80 per cent in 50 minutes.

The car's name stands for Electronic Smart Interface Vehicle and is a design subject to display the company's ambition for autonomous and zero-emissions driving.

Covering a broad spread at the 2018 Geneva motor show , SsangYong has unveiled its new Musso pickup and an E-Siv all-electric concept car, the latter showcasing the Korean SUV brand's future product direction.

Powered by a 140kw electric motor - that's around 197bhp - SsangYong claims the E-Siv will have a range of between 199 and 280 miles, with 80% charge achieved after 50 minutes. So not much new there in terms of electric vehicles, but quite an upgrade voer typical SsangYong models.

The production vehicle spawned from the e-SIV will be Ssangyong's C-segment SUV offering which will slot in between the Tivoli and the full-sized Rexton in the brand's SUV family. This styling direction can already be seen in the Rexton, as well as the Tivoli EVR EV concept that Ssangyong took to Geneva in 2015. Under the car's bonnet is a 188hp electric motor, which powers it to a top speed of 150kph. The car's range is claimed to be 449km, putting the e-SIV 21km down on the upcoming Hyundai Kona EV, which is also making its debut at the Geneva motor show. It also comes with a 50-minute fast charge that charges the car to 80 percent.

The SIV-2 concept was originally reported to preview the brand's offering in the crowded segment of the Qashqai, so it's expected that the e-SIV will show a closer-to-production version of the car. Korean automaker SsangYong Motor says it may be rolling out three battery electric vehicles by 2020 at the latest, according to UK boss Paul Williams.

SsangYong has a strategy for hybrids and EVs, and the next generation of models will show this, Williams said. The e-XIV plug-in hybrid concept - which is short for Electric Exciting user-Interface Vehicle - was designed to show off at the Paris Motor Show in 2012.

The company is focusing more on battery electric vehicles for the long term, though hybrid systems will also be part of its future, he said.
