There's really no reason a car like the 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Cabriolet shouldn't be on the list of anyone seeking a 4-seat luxury convertible that walks the line between day-to-day practicality (standard all-wheel drive for half the lineup, comfy suspension tuning, excellent road manners) and all-out performance (the explosive C 63 and C 63 S).

2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Cabriolet pricing and specs: Topless two-door due in October

Local pricing for the 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Cabriolet range has been announced before it hits showrooms in October.

Starting at $85,900 for the base C200 and topping out at $179,900 for the twin-turbo V8 Mercedes-AMG C63 variant plus on-road costs, commanding a premium of between $14,000 and $20,000 over the equivalent C-Class Coupe , depending on the model.

All C-Class Cabriolet models bar the base C200 feature the company's Airscarf neck-level heaters, while every model comes standard with semi-autonomous emergency braking, blind spot assistance, driver fatigue monitor, a 360-degree camera, nine airbags and an active bonnet.

The entry-level C200 is powered by a 135kW/300Nm 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission.

Standard equipment includes metallic paint, 18-inch AMG alloy wheels, heat-reflecting leather upholstery, AMG exterior styling, sports suspension, LED headlights, selectable driving modes, Garmin satellite navigation system, DAB+ digital radio, electrically-adjustable front seats with memory function and ‘Black Ash Open Pore' wood trim.

In terms of equipment, the C300 adds 19-inch AMG alloy wheels, Burmester sound system, Comand online navigation system, heated front seats, Airscarf neck-level heating, keyless entry and start, along with a sports exhaust system.

Third up the ladder is the Mercedes-AMG C43 4Matic ($119,900 plus on-roads), which utilises a 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 engine with outputs of 270kW and 520Nm, sent to all four wheels via a nine-speed automatic.

Sprinting from 0-100km/h in just 4.8 seconds, the open-top C43 also comes with AMG ride-control sports suspension.

At the top of the C-Class Cabriolet range is the Mercedes-AMG C63 S, powered by the company's 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine, producing 375kW of power and 700Nm of torque.

Like the coupe, the C63 S Cabriolet comes standard with 19-inch front and 20-inch rear AMG alloy wheels, AMG active dynamic engine mounts, AMG electronic rear axle locking differential, AMG performance brakes and an AMG performance sports exhaust system.

The 2017 Mercedes-Benz and Mercedes-AMG C-Class Cabriolet range is available to order now, with the regular models arriving in October and the hotter AMG variants coming early in 2017.

The E-Class Cabriolet gets a range of new and upgraded engines, which are mounted longitudinally and channel drive to either the rear or all four wheels, depending on the model. The car's new platform is also more rigid than the previous-generation model's, which was taken from the C-Class. Mercedes' latest evolution of air suspension, Air Body Control, is also available.

It's a new car, says Christian Früh, the man in charge of the new E-Class Cabriolet's development. As with the new E-Class Coupé, though, we can expect a more powerful version of the turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol with 242bhp in an E 300 Cabriolet, a turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 petrol with 328bhp in an E 400 Cabriolet, and a 191bhp version of the turbocharged 2.0-litre diesel in an entry-level E 220 d Cabriolet.

All E-Class Cabriolet models come with nine-speed 9G-Tronic torque converter-equipped automatic gearbox. The range-topping E 400 4Matic will also get standard four-wheel drive, which Früh says helps to make the new E-Class Cabriolet truly a car for all seasons thanks to four-wheel drive's greater traction.

The E-Class Cabriolet is larger than its predecessor. This makes it 128mm longer, 74mm wider and 32mm higher than the previous E-Class Cabriolet.

The car's folding roof, engineered by Austrian specialist Magna, draws heavily on the design of the smaller C-Class Cabriolet's. Mercedes-Benz claims a boot capacity of 360 litres with the roof up, meaning the new car has 30 litres less room than its predecessor and, despite a longer wheelbase and a larger body, just 5 litres more than the smaller C-Class Cabriolet. However, the E-Class Cabriolet's rear seats can be folded down for more storage space.

There are also high-strength steel strengthening elements within the car's sills and rear bulkhead.

The other car is a rear-wheel-drive E 300 d. Früh says his engineering team has worked hard to broaden the characteristics of the E-Class Cabriolet's standard Dynamic Select system, which gives you four different drive modes: Eco, Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus. Benz's biggest-selling model, however, has at last added a convertible to the long-running sedan, wagon and coupe body styles.

Starting notably lower than the CLK ever did, from $85,900 (plus on-road costs), the simply named C-Class Cabriolet is priced to divert prospects away from the likes of the Audi A5 Cabriolet and BMW 4-Series Convertible.

The Cabriolet picks up many of the Coupe's design cues, including AMG body kit and a rear end more rounded than the C-Class sedan's, though naturally it's all change overhead.

Mercedes shares the folding-fabric-roof approach with Audi in contrast to BMW's all-metal philosophy, though Australian-market models feature a multi-layer acoustic roof that's derived from the S-Class Cabriolet's version and optional in Europe.

TRIESTE, ITALY-Mercedes-Benz has designated 2016 as The Year of the Dream Car.

Today, it's the 2017 C-Class Cabriolet's turn.

We will get this car in four levels of heat: Mercedes-Benz C300 4MATIC; Mercedes-AMG C 43 4MATIC; Mercedes-AMG C63, and Mercedes-AMG C 63 S.

To decode: the first two will be full-time four-wheel drive; the latter two rear-wheel drive.

Both have a nine-speed automatic transmission.

The C 63 models use a 4.0 litre twin-turbo V8, producing 469 horsepower, or 503 in the S version, bolted to Mercedes's seven-speed ‘MCT,' for Multi-Clutch Transmission. To complete the decoding, ‘Mercedes-AMG' means the cars have AMG equipment on them, but aren't full-on AMG models, i.e., they are built on normal Mercedes assembly lines, not in the AMG factory.
